1991 Giant Allegre — Collector Restoration
58 cm | Triple-Butted Lugged Chromoly | Period-Correct Shimano
The Giant Allegre is a beautiful example of a high-quality early-1990s road bicycle, built at a fascinating point in cycling history — as the era of the traditional steel racing bicycle was beginning to give way to aluminium and, ultimately, carbon.
Made in Taiwan in 1991, the Allegre features a triple-butted, lugged chromoly steel frame, combining the elegant lines and craftsmanship of a traditional steel road bicycle with the increasingly sophisticated manufacturing for which Giant was becoming known.
This example has undergone a comprehensive and sympathetic restoration, with an emphasis on preserving its original character, period appearance and integrity.
The bicycle was completely stripped, with the frame, components and individual sub-assemblies carefully cleaned, treated, polished, serviced and rebuilt. Particular attention was given to retaining its period Shimano componentry and the visual character of the original bicycle.
Replacement has been deliberately restrained and sympathetic. New premium bar tape and saddle complement the original aesthetic, while new tyres and chain have been fitted. A modern sealed tapered cartridge bottom bracket provides a discreet mechanical improvement while preserving the appearance and character of the original drivetrain.
The result remains unmistakably a 1991 Giant Allegre.
A Bicycle from a Changing Era
The Allegre comes from an important transitional period in bicycle design.
By the early 1990s, the traditional lugged steel road bicycle was approaching the end of its period of dominance. Aluminium was becoming increasingly important and carbon fibre would soon transform the performance bicycle market.
The Allegre captures that moment beautifully: slender chromoly tubing, traditional lugged construction and classic road proportions, produced by a Taiwanese manufacturer that would go on to become one of the world's most significant bicycle makers.
More than three decades later, those qualities give the bicycle a presence and character quite different from a contemporary road machine.
The Restoration
Our intention with this Allegre was not to reinvent it, but to preserve what makes a 35-year-old bicycle special.
Original components have been retained wherever appropriate and painstakingly cleaned, serviced and restored. Signs of the bicycle's history have been respected rather than unnecessarily erased, while carefully selected replacement components ensure that the finished bicycle presents and functions to the standard expected of a comprehensive restoration.
It is a restoration intended to celebrate the bicycle rather than modernise it.
For the collector, the Allegre presents beautifully as a display piece — an evocative example of the traditional lugged steel road bicycle at the beginning of the 1990s.
For those who wish to ride it, it remains a fully functional classic road bicycle, offering the distinctive character and experience of a quality chromoly steel frame.

Rider Fit
The 58 cm frame is particularly suited to a taller rider.
As a general guide, it is likely to suit riders approximately 183–191 cm (6'0"–6'3"), depending on individual proportions, inseam and preferred riding position.
As with all classic road bicycles, we recommend assessing fit individually rather than relying on height alone.
A Classic Worth Preserving
Whether acquired as a centrepiece for a collection, displayed as an example of early-1990s bicycle design, or occasionally taken out and enjoyed on the road, this Allegre represents something increasingly difficult to find: a beautifully restored, period-correct, triple-butted lugged steel road bicycle from the closing years of the traditional steel era.
