This beautifully restored proto-BMX bicycle makes a bold statement wherever its rider sallies forth.

Produced in the late 1970s in the famed Raleigh Nottingham factory, the BSA 18 was originally conceived as a compact modular with 18-inch wheels and 28 spokes.

The bicycle was enjoyed for a time, before being retired in a garden shed where it languished for decades until we acquired it in early 2024.

We have meticulously rebuilt the BSA from the ground up with hand-built heavy-duty 20-inch wheels and puncture resistant tyres. Other improvements include:

  • A new Sturmey Archer 3-speed drivetrain to help improve shifting and increase the rear wheel's load bearing capacity to support a heavier rider with cargo.
  • The handlebar stem has been extended for a more comfortable upright riding position.
  • The cockpit features wider handlebars for improved handling and stability, comfort grips and an iconic brass Crane bell, made in Japan, with plenty of room for lights, a handlebar bag and more.
  • The rear carrier is fitted with a non-drive side adaptor to allow a pannier to be attached away from the rider’s feet, thereby helping minimise heel-strike.
  • The ergonomic gel saddle makes riding for long hours a comfortable proposition.
  • When it comes to brake safety and reliability, we have spared no expense, installing premium salmon all-weather Kool Stop Internationals in the front wheel and Eagle 2 pads in the rear.
  •  A fresh single-speed KMC chain, all new brakes cables and housing, tucked away in the reinforced top tube, rounds out the style and practicality of this very rare gem.
  • New classic style pedals
  • The BSA 18 is ride-ready having been extensively tested in a variety of weather and road conditions with a combined rider/cargo load-rating of 100 kg.
  • Typical of 20-inch BMX style bicycles, the front wheel is easy to lift upon acceleration, especially on steep up-hill grades. If you enjoy 'popping wheelies' all good! Otherwise, this tendency can be easily managed with a bit of practice.
