About the Mitchell

The Mitchell bicycle is a unique 2-wheeled step through. It is a singular example of the transnational trade flows in the 1970s and 1980s when Japan was exporting quality steel bicycles to the rest of the world, including Australia. Many of these bicycles were fitted with the newly emerging Shimano gear-shifting technologies aimed at making cycling accessible to everyday people.

The Mitchell was pre-assembled in Japan and fitted out with a Shimano 3S internally geared hub and thumb shifter. This particular model was post-assembled at The Royal Blind Society's bicycle operations in Enfield, Sydney in the 1970s. The name Mitchell bicycle hails from the street where the RBS was headquartered, Mitchell Street.

The condition of the bicycle was quite poor when it first presented itself. The drive-side hub axle had been jaggedly hand-sawed and a makeshift pushrod had been crudely inserted into the hollow axle to actuate gear shifting. But because of its local historical connection with the RBS, we felt that this was a special bicycle that merited restoration.

Restoration work

Our aim was to celebrate the heritage of the bicycle and to respect its historical integrity. We patiently disassembled the bicycle, into its individual components and sub-assemblies and treated them for rust. The rear wheel was rebuilt with a different Shimano 3S hub and original shifter that were both in excellent condition.

The bicycle was refitted with high quality tyres, rubber rim tape and inner tubes, cables and cable housing, brake blocks, chain and new hand grips. To help enhance the bicycle's utility and safety, we attached a quality WALD basket, cargo net, Bontrager day/night LED lights, frame pump, and a very rare rolled tool pouch by Deus Ex Machina. More information about the bicycle's quality components is included further below.

The low-maintenance Mitchell, has been weather-proofed and thoroughly road-tested. It's an excellent all-rounder for cruising, shopping, running errands, keeping up with traffic and climbing hills. We would love it to go to a good home where it will be enjoyed for years to come.
